Matt Richards

PEELING BACK THE VENEER
ONE STORY AT A TIME

BIOGRAPHY

Through the bush, beach and bitumen of 1980s Western Australia speeds a boy on a BMX, VHS tapes rattling in his backpack…

Growing up, Matt hired every movie in his local video store. And even though none of them felt like where he was, he found parts of himself in each character.

Spanning music videos, documentaries, branded content, short films and commercials, Matt’s work is infused with social commentary. He tells stories with depth and creates worlds that are honest to watch.

His short films First Contact (2012), Rabbit (2014) and The Disappearance of Willie Bingham (2015) have screened in competition at over 100 international festivals and collected close to 50 awards and nominations.

With a Master of Directing (Narrative) from the Victorian College of the Arts and an Advanced Diploma in Film & TV from the Western Australian School of Art, Design & Media, Matt’s ability to unmask the human condition drives the thought-provoking narrative he directs.
